El Globo Sabroso

there are many things i should write about now – important stuff like our new apartment or adjusting to life in a society that does not hide its huge gaps between rich and poor.

but instead of weighty matters, social or personal, all i can think about is one fabulous discovery we have made: the chain of bakeries called El Globo. everything about this place is fabulous – the automatic doors that swing open and invite you in with a wafting wave of intoxicatingly bready scents, the lines of pastries (sweet and savory) that you can heap on to a round silver tray without breaking your budget, the cashiers who handle your purchases so carefully that you know they must realize how delightful they are too.

for the past two days, we have opted out of a sit-down meal at any of the wide variety of places we could choose here, deciding instead to fill a tray of el globo’s goodies and munch on our selections from the happy comfort of our hotel bed. we’ve augmented a baguette with some tasty salami and manchengo cheese, and played around with various alchohalic accompaniments, and every miniture picnic has been incredible. one of these days i’ll take the creation outdoors – probably into some secluded area in Mexico City’s gigantic Chapultepec Park – but for now it is the perfect end to another long and rainy day. trays full of pastries may not be the way to slim down while in mexico, but it is most certainly the way to make us very, very happy at pretty much any point in the day!

(next visit i’ll try to post some pictures of these heavenly postres. but it is very hard to be disciplined enough not to eat them until after i can get to my camera!)

YAY! You found a place to live and are eating well. Do they have good chocolate? mmm

they have whole-wheat chocolate chip muffins. they are not oily/moist like in the US (which is good), but they crumble easy. that is their only flaw. i get one on every visit. on our first visit, the baguette we picked was still warm from the oven. yum.

no data on chocolate yet, except that hershey bars are just as bad here – too milky/mushy/sweet.

Leave it to Steph to find the baked goods. Remember when you ate those 3 loaves of bread in Romania in less than 10 minutes and then threw a rock at that car as it was carrying the babies. Too funny!
